Troop 1 – Paducah KY

2008 Events

This is an overview of Troop 1 activities during 2008:

  • 14 scouts and 4 adults attended the bowling party on December 14 at Cardinal Lanes.

  • The troop rang the bell for the Salvation Army twice in December in front of the Wal-Mart on Hinkleville Road.

  • A Court of Honor was held on November 24.  Nineteen scouts received over 40 merit badges and rank advancements.

  • Thanks to the 17 scouts and 8 adults who helped Saturday, November 22 at Krogers on the Groceries for the Good food drive.  Ten agencies will benefit from everyone's help.  Not only did the boys help with the donations, they picked up some grocery sacking skills for summer job opportunities down the road!  Over 74 hours of service hours were contributed Saturday!

  • About 10 scouts camped overnight at Massac State Park on November 15.

  • We had 20 scouts attend the Murray State Merit Badge Day on November 1.  The troop came away with 16 merit badges and four partials.  Thanks go to the parents who drove -- Kirk Edwards, Mike Wentworth and Stanley Reed.  Mike gets an honorary MB as he was in Citizenship in the Nation all day!!  Our Scouts led the opening and closing Flag Ceremony...GREAT Job!

  • Thanks to Mr. Edwards for coordinating the Golf Merit Badge outing this past Saturday, October 25.  Eight scouts played golf at Paxton Park until almost dark.  Four adults helped out.

  • Thanks to the 8 scouts who sold over $3,000 worth of popcorn.  Scouts will receive 25% of their sales in Troop 1 Scout bucks for future events and fees.  We want to thank Wendy Snyder for handling the popcorn sales and orders.

  • Thanks to everyone for a GREAT Fall Camporee at Wildcat Hollow in Russellville, KY in October.  We had 18 Scouts and 9 adults make the trip.  Weather was GREAT!  Food was GREAT!  The Camporee was well attended as we competed with 20 Troops with over 300 folks in attendance.  Congratulations to Carson and Lucas who captured FIRST PLACE in the Orienteering Competition.  They were the only team to get 100% of the readings correct!  Also, congratulations to Colin and Adam for finishing 4th in the Canoe race!  Both of these competitions had over 30 teams competing.

  • Troop 1 was again featured on WPSD-TV following the aftermath of Tropical Storm Ike as it moved through Kentucky.  The troop was camping at the Columbus-Belmont State Park when high winds from the storm hit the area.  Click here to see Troop 1 on TV.

  • A Court of Honor was held on August 25th.  There were 88 merit badges awarded and many rank advancements.  Mr. Kiser congratulated all scouts for their efforts during summer camp and throughout the summer.  12 Scouts earned the Tenderfoot rank.  One Eagle Scout earned his second gold palm which equates to 25 additional merit badges earned above the 21 needed for Eagle.

  • 18 scouts and five adult leaders attended a Miners baseball game on Saturday, August 16th.  The Miners won the game with a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning.  After the game everyone camped out at Fern Clyffe State Park.  The troop returned to Paducah on Sunday morning.

  • In July, 18 White Water Rafters made it down the Ocoee River in Tennessee.  Everyone got dumped in the waster at one time or another.  Scouts earned their Whitewater and Canoeing merit badges.  Pictures will be provided on a CD and hopefully posted on the website.  Special thanks go to the Dads who drove -- Mr. Kiser, Mr. Kight, Mr. Thorn and Dr. Stricklin.  It was a 650 mile round trip.

  • Troop 1 completed another great week at Scout Camp in early June.  We had 21 scouts and many adults come down to join the fun.  We were on the low end of the ticks removed at the medic's office (one troop had 125 removed in one day).  Eight scouts participated in Eagle Bound, 1 scout did the "Adventure Sailing" and many others earned merit badges.  We captured first in the Pentathlon, retired the colors at flags, said grace and marched our way to flags with the drums each day (a Troop 1 Tradition)!

  • Congratulations to all scouts receiving rank advancements and merit badges at the Court of Honor on May 19.  Eight scouts made the Scout rank.  One made Tenderfoot and two made Second Class.  One made First Class and one made Life.  Five scouts and leaders were tapped out for the Order of the Arrow.

  • Thanks to the 8 scouts who went to Pack 22's Blue and Gold Banquet and welcomed 3 new scouts into Troop 1.  Don't forget to ask someone to visit our meeting sometime.

  • 17 scouts attended the EEI Merit Badge Day on February 23rd.

  • 10 Scouts attended a Webeloes Crossover ceremony at Pack 19 on Saturday, February 23rd.  4 Webeloes crossed over and joined the troop.

  • Troop 1 participated in Scout Sunday on February 3rd at Grace Episcopal Church.  All scouts wore Class A uniforms and sat at the front of the church.  Scouts led the bible readings and group prayers during the service.  Our Senior Patrol Leader and Scoutmaster both thanked Grace Episcopal for sponsoring our troop since 1911.

  • The troop participated in the Klondike Derby at Camp Manchester the weekend of January 18 - 20.  15 scouts and 7 adults endured temperatures that reached the low teens on both nights, so all scouts earned their Polar Bear badge. Troop 1 was featured on a News Channel 6 story about the Klondike Derby.  Click here to view the video.
